Reserve of the biosphere



The island was declared Reserve of the Biosphere in Octobre of 1993 by UNESCO. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. César Manrique, many sided artist whose creative work left a deep sing, was one of the great promoters of the Declaration. One of the aspects considered for the Declaration was his own work, a work of intervention in the island and integrated in it, a great example of the asosiation between art and nature.

The declaration of Reserve of Biosphere recognizes the work made during decades by the men an women of Lanzarote, who fought to create an innovative and original model of development. This allws the island to be in the vanguard of a movement directed towards to shop the voracity of the tourist growth.

What is a reserve of the biosphere.

The Reserves of Biosphere are representative afeas of territories whose importance has been recognized internationally by the United Nations, as much for the conservation as for the provision of practical knowledge that can contribute to a Suntained development. The Reserves of Biosphere try to assure a future built from the own history, having declared more than three hundred, distributed in a hundred countries.

The objective of a Reserve of Biosphere is the reservation of the natural values by means of a management scientifically correct, socially, respectful, culturally creative and operatively sustainable. Lanzarote has high environmental qualities and it also has protected enclaves, like pure laboratories, to confront the challenge derived from its declaration as Reserve of Biosphere.
