North Route

We recommend you start tour in Teguise – Lanzarote’s former capital. Take the road to Haría and pass through the valley of Los Valles a small farming village which leads on to the wind farm called el parquet eólico. Having rounded some hair-pin bends, you will come across a superb view of Haría – the luscious “valley of a thousand palms”.

Taking the new road north and passing through the town of Máguez you will see the Corona Volcano. A little further on you will come across the village of Yé which is next to the Mirador del Río – the vantage point nestling at the top of the cliffs of Famara. Here you can enjoy a panoramic view of the small group of isaçlands known as the Chinijo or “Baby” Archipelago situates at the northern end of Lanzarote.

In the north you can also find the small fishing village of Órzola famed for its excellent fish restaurants. From here you can catch the ferry which takes you to the islands of La Graciosa. The road out of Órzola will lead you to the water grottoes of Jameos del Agua – a must- see for any visitor, with its cool oasis –like interior and its natural and artificial lagoons. It also has an underground concert hall housed in a volcanic cavern.

Close by are the Green’s Caves – La Cueva de los Verdes a long volcanic tunnel used by the islanders in the olden days as a place of refuge to hide from pirate attacks. An hour-long guided tour will take you a 2 km tour of the caves and you can marvel at the incredible textures and colours created by the motion of the lava as it flowed through the earth.

Following this route will take you through the coastal villages Arrieta and Punta Mujeres. These are two ideal places to relax and enjoy the fresh catch of the day the Cactus Garden – Jardin de Catus is the last stop. Created by César Manrique, it is home to over 1.500 cactus and boast 1.000 different species housed in a stone amphitheatre.
