South Route

This journey begins in the village of Mozaga. Heading south you will drive through the wine growing region of La Geria. It ’s a wholly unique landscape dominated by thousands of horseshoe walls which have been built to protect the grapevine as it grows in pits hollowed out of the volcanic ash. The quality of Lanzarote wines are regulated by an Appellation of Origin Control Board.

The Wine Museums in the El Grifo vineyards serves as testimony to the rich wine-growing tradition on the island.

The journey through La Geria ends in Uga and a little further along stands the immaculately clean village of Yaiza. Following the coast road south you will reach the historic salt ponds of Las Salinas de Janubio – probably the world’s most important example of this ingenious method used to obtain salt from sea water. A short distance along are the “Boiling Pots” or Los Hervideros where the sea crashes against the land with and incredible force and nearby is the village of El Golfo which sits next to a half –sub- merged volcanic crater of the same name and the lagoon of El Charco de los Clicos.

Going back in the direction of Yaiza you can head towards Timanfaya National Park and its impressive sea of lava which covers a surface are of 52 km2 your first chance to explore the volcanoes could be on the back of one of the camels waiting on the roadside as you approach the entrance to park. Otherwise known as the Fire Mountains or the Montañas del Fuego here you can visit the Diablo restaurant and marvel at the different displays of heat rising from the earth’s surface. This is the departure point for coach tours along the “Route of the Volcanoes”.

Taking the road north to the village of Tinajo, or “Lanzarote’s pantry” as it is sometimes referred to because of its high concentration of agricultural lands, you will then come across the Timanfaya Visitors' Centre; a must-see for visitors who wish to learn all about volcanoes and their native flora and fauna.
